Trump’s Grand Strategy: A Self-Reliant Europe and a Less-Nuclear World

President Donald Trump’s grand strategy appears to have two key pillars: fostering a more self-reliant Europe to handle regional security like in Ukraine, and pursuing a long-term reduction in nuclear arms with Russia.
The first pillar was evident in a recent call with Vladimir Putin, where Trump reinforced the idea of a European-led security framework for Ukraine. This concept was previously solidified in an August 18 meeting with President Zelensky and European leaders.
Under this plan, Europe would provide the “significant security guarantees” for Kyiv, with the U.S. acting as “backup.” This move is designed to compel European allies to invest more in their own defense capabilities.
The second pillar involves looking beyond current conflicts. Trump has revealed that his conversations with Putin, including at an August 15 meeting in Alaska, are aimed at the ambitious long-term goal of reducing their nuclear arsenals once the Ukraine war is over.
