Taiwan’s envoy to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the crucial role of American arms sales in bolstering Taiwan’s defense capabilities amid rising military pressure from China. As the island faces increasing security challenges, Yui highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to ramping up its defense budget and enhancing its own military readiness. He emphasized the necessity for Taiwan to invest in its self-defense and not rely solely on external assistance.
A significant weapons proposal valued at approximately US$14 billion is currently under consideration by the U.S. administration. This package has garnered backing from U.S. lawmakers, who view the urgency of Taiwan’s defense requirements as a response to China’s escalating military maneuvers in the vicinity. The proposed arms deal is seen as a vital step in addressing Taiwan’s strategic needs in light of the regional security dynamics.
Yui pointed out that the extent of military support should align with the perceived threat level, referencing the frequent Chinese military drills, naval deployments, and aerial operations near Taiwan. He reiterated the island’s aspiration to safeguard its security and preserve its democratic system through defensive strategies.
