Mike Rogers Criticized for Opposing Innovative 9/11 Responder Benefits Program

Date:

In the heated race for Michigan’s open Senate seat, Republican candidate Mike Rogers is under scrutiny for his past voting record on healthcare and benefits for 9/11 first responders and survivors. This comes as Rogers criticizes his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, over previous statements regarding the September 11 attacks. Rogers accuses El-Sayed of showing sympathy for the attacks, based on past social media posts, a claim that has been contested by critics.

Rogers’ legislative history reveals that he voted against the 2010 James Zadroga Act, a crucial piece of legislation that ensured healthcare and monitoring for 9/11 responders and survivors exposed to hazardous conditions at Ground Zero. During discussions on the bill, Rogers expressed concerns that the legislation could jeopardize the nation’s finances. Despite his objections and opposition from other Republicans, the measure passed in the House.

In addition, Rogers voted in 2002 against a proposal for additional funding for veterans’ healthcare and first responders, which was part of a broader legislative package addressing the financial repercussions of 9/11 on New York schools. Over the years, he has also opposed several initiatives focusing on funding, pensions, and other benefits for first responders, drawing criticism from advocates.

John Feal, a 9/11 responder actively advocating for healthcare benefits, has been vocal about his disapproval of Rogers’ stance, labeling it a betrayal. Feal noted that he personally engaged with Rogers regarding the Zadroga legislation while it was under consideration in Congress, emphasizing the importance of these benefits.

Adding to the controversy, Rogers recently claimed in a campaign email that he personally witnessed Osama bin Laden’s body following the US raid in Pakistan that resulted in the terrorist leader’s death. However, Rogers was neither present in Pakistan during the operation nor in the White House Situation Room where US officials were monitoring the raid. The unfolding scrutiny surrounding Rogers’ actions and statements highlights the contentious nature of the Senate race, which could influence the balance of power in Congress.
