Guilty as Charged: Colombia Convicts Ex-President Uribe of Witness Tampering

Date:

Álvaro Uribe, once a dominant figure in Colombian politics, has been convicted of criminal witness tampering in a case that captivated the country. This ruling is the first of its kind against a Colombian former president.
The conviction originates from a failed attempt in 2012 to accuse Senator Iván Cepeda of defamation. The Supreme Court reversed course and instead pursued Uribe, eventually uncovering efforts to alter testimony.
The prosecution presented strong witness accounts, including that of a former paramilitary member who detailed interactions with Uribe. These accounts formed the backbone of the court’s decision.
Now facing up to 12 years in prison, Uribe’s conviction represents a defining moment for Colombia’s justice system. It raises the stakes for future political and judicial confrontations.
