Tech Shift Reduces Canadian Travel to U.S., Cuts Spending by $3.3 Billion

Date:

Canadians have notably reduced their travel spending in the United States by $3.3 billion in 2025 compared to the previous year, signaling a major change in their travel habits amid ongoing political and trade frictions. Official statistics reveal that Canadian expenditures on U.S. travel decreased from $22.1 billion in 2024 to $18.8 billion in 2025, while spending on trips to international destinations outside the United States surged by $3.6 billion, totaling $22.8 billion.

The data highlights a significant rise in Canadian travel to other regions, with European destinations witnessing nearly a 14% increase and Asian visits climbing by almost 17%. This trend suggests a growing preference among Canadians for international destinations other than the U.S. as they explore alternative travel options.

The decrease in travel to the United States is also reflected in the sharp decline of border traffic throughout 2025. Return trips from the U.S. to Canada, whether by road or air, dropped by approximately 25% compared to the previous year. The most pronounced decline occurred in July, with border crossings plummeting by around one-third.

As the pattern extends into 2026, travel volumes to the United States continue to lag behind previous figures. This sustained trend indicates a long-term shift in Canadian travel behavior away from the U.S. as their preferred destination. Officials note that these figures underscore a significant change in the travel dynamics between the two neighboring countries.
