Taiwan Highlights Tech-Driven Expansion in China’s Global Repression Tactics

Date:

China’s recent enactment of the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law is raising alarms among Taiwanese security officials who warn of its potential to enhance Beijing’s capability to target dissenters beyond its borders. Coming into effect this week, the law mandates Chinese citizens to uphold national unity and enables legal actions against individuals or entities accused of fostering division, irrespective of their global location.

The Taiwanese official highlighted five primary strategies employed by China for transnational repression. These include criminalizing anti-government expressions abroad, intimidating critics by retaliating against their families, utilizing international legal channels like Interpol red notices against dissidents, branding advocates of pro-democracy initiatives as extremists, and executing abductions or forced returns.

Concerns are further amplified by claims that China manages overseas police stations with the purpose of overseeing and applying pressure on critics residing in other countries. Such activities are raising serious questions about breaches of international law and established diplomatic protocols.

In response to these developments, Taiwan is actively working to heighten public awareness regarding the potential dangers associated with travel to China. Additionally, the island nation is intensifying its measures to counteract activities that might facilitate foreign interference, thereby safeguarding its citizens and interests from external threats.
