Central Asia’s Leaders Look West: US Summit Marks Policy Shift

Date:

In a notable policy shift, the leaders of Central Asia are looking West, with a major summit with the US president scheduled for November 6 in Washington.
This meeting, confirmed by the presidents of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, is part of a deliberate “multi-vector” foreign policy to reduce their historical dependence on Russia.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has accelerated this trend, sparking a competition for influence among global powers.
The US is the latest to host the C5, following similar summits by the EU, China, and Russia earlier in the year.
The region, rich in rare earths and strategically located, is leveraging this newfound attention to attract investment and assert its growing independence on the world stage.
