Meta has unveiled Muse Spark Open, a new open-weight artificial intelligence model targeting tasks in coding, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning. According to Meta’s AI chief, Alexandr Wang, this model is among the most advanced open-weight systems developed in the United States, designed to rival leading models from Chinese tech firms.
Open-weight models, like Muse Spark Open, allow developers to download and adapt a model’s weights for various applications, offering more flexibility than fully closed systems. Meta’s latest release aims to compete with other open-weight models, including Alibaba’s Qwen, Moonshot AI’s Kimi, and Z.ai’s GLM.
Meta emphasizes that Muse Spark Open is optimized to operate effectively on Apple’s M5 Ultra chips. The company suggests that users could potentially run the model locally by combining two Mac Studios equipped with these chips, though this would require considerable computing resources.
This launch follows Meta’s recent introduction of another AI model intended to compete with top-tier closed systems. These efforts underscore Meta’s strategy to fortify its standing in the evolving AI market while enhancing its capabilities across both open-weight and proprietary models.
