Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic venture, The Odyssey, has made an impressive mark at the global box office, raking in $264 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This remarkable feat surpasses the debut of his 2023 release, Oppenheimer. The film, featuring a stellar cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem. It chronicles the perilous 10-year journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home following the Trojan War.
With a production budget set at $250 million, The Odyssey represents Nolan’s most significant opening outside his famous Batman franchise and marks his most robust box-office debut since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. In North America alone, the film amassed $124.5 million, securing its place as the third-largest opening of the year, trailing only behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Despite possessing an R rating, the film successfully drew large crowds, particularly appealing to viewers between the ages of 18 and 34.
Internationally, the film found its strongest opening in the United Kingdom and Ireland, where it generated £12.9 million over the first three days. The movie is noted for being the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, offering audiences sharper and higher-resolution visuals. It premiered in over 12,800 locations and was showcased on 26,000 screens worldwide, including 440 IMAX screens.
The Odyssey has been met with widespread critical acclaim, featuring an ensemble cast that also includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron. This success comes as Nolan hints that it could be at least three years before he embarks on directing another film, citing the immense scale and challenges associated with bringing The Odyssey to the big screen.
