Full Toss, Two Catches, One Tragedy: New Zealand’s Final Undone in the 15th Over

Date:

Cricket is a game of fine margins, but the 15th over of India’s innings in Sunday’s T20 World Cup final delivered something far stranger: three wickets off three deliveries that included two full tosses, a golden duck for the captain, and a brilliant diving catch. India still posted 255 and won by 96 runs, but the 15th over will be remembered as the strangest passage of play in the final.
India had built a platform of extraordinary quality before that point. The powerplay had produced 92 for no loss in six overs, and Sharma, Samson, and Kishan had all reached fifty. At 191 for one in the 14th over, India seemed destined for 300. Then Neesham’s over — one run, three wickets — brought Samson (89 off 46), Kishan (54 off 25), and Suryakumar (golden duck) all back to the pavilion.
Samson was caught at long-on off a full toss. Kishan followed off another full toss in the same manner. Suryakumar attempted to pull a short delivery and was caught brilliantly by Ravindra at deep backward square. In the space of five overs, India went from 191 for one to stumbling, before Dube’s hitting in the final over revived the total to 255.
New Zealand’s reply had its moments — Seifert showed fight, Allen showed a flash of promise before departing for nine — but the asking rate was always going to be beyond them. Bumrah was clinical with three wickets, and the fielding, while not flawless due to two drops, was energetic throughout. New Zealand folded for 159.
India won the World Cup. The three-wicket 15th over was the quirky twist in an otherwise dominant display, a brief reminder that T20 cricket can surprise even its masters before returning to the expected outcome.
