Trump and Xi Summit Yields No Major AI Agreement, Extends Trade Truce

Date:

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up a three-day summit in Washington without reaching a significant agreement on artificial intelligence (AI), despite escalating global concerns about its rapid advancement. The summit, marking the first visit by a Chinese president to the White House in over a decade, addressed multiple issues including trade relations, Taiwan, and ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.

One of the summit’s primary outcomes was the extension of the current trade truce between the two nations for an additional two months. While AI was a central topic of discussion, no formal framework or agreement was established to curb the development of advanced AI systems or to set common safety standards. Xi emphasized the joint responsibility of the United States and China to manage AI development responsibly and ensure it remains under human control, advocating for increased cooperation on the potential risks associated with the technology.

Throughout the summit, Trump reiterated the importance of maintaining the United States’ technological edge over China. He also introduced his preferred term “super intelligence” for advanced AI, though specific details of the discussions on the technology were limited.

The meeting included a visit to the National Archives where Trump and Xi viewed essential US founding documents. The summit concluded without a major breakthrough on AI, but the leaders are expected to reconvene later this year at events such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China and the G20 summit in the United States.
