To rule a kingdom, a sovereign needs control and stability. A top cardiologist suggests that to have a long and healthy reign over your own life, you need a “sovereign skill”: balance. The 10-second, one-legged stand is a test of your command over your own physical domain.
This idea is supported by a 2022 study that assessed this “sovereign skill” in 1,700 adults. The research showed that those who had firm control over their bodies, demonstrated by good balance, were far more likely to have a long and prosperous “reign.”
The study found that rulers with this skill—passing the 10-second test—had a greater than 90% chance of their kingdom remaining strong and prosperous (i.e., disability-free survival) for the next seven years. A loss of control, however, signaled a potential overthrow by illness.
The heart specialist explains that this is because balance is a test of your central command. It requires your brain, the “ruler,” to issue clear commands and receive accurate reports from all corners of the kingdom—your senses and muscles. A rebellion in the ranks shows up as instability.
If your rule feels shaky, you can consolidate your power. The expert recommends a program to strengthen your reign. She advises practices like Tai Chi and yoga to improve your central control, restore order to your domain, and ensure a long and healthy rule over your life.
