China and US to Reduce Tariffs on $60 Billion in Goods, Extending Trade Truce

Date:

In a significant development for international trade, China and the United States have agreed to reduce tariffs on $60 billion worth of goods exchanged between the two nations. This agreement targets a range of products, including agricultural commodities, seafood, household appliances, toys, and cosmetics, marking a collaborative effort to ease trade tensions.

Under the terms of the agreement, each country has earmarked approximately $30 billion in non-sensitive goods for reduced tariffs. The United States anticipates that this move will enhance market access for a sizable portion of its exports to China, potentially boosting economic interactions and trade volumes.

Specifically, China will lower tariffs on several U.S. agricultural products such as corn, wheat, sorghum, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils, and seafood. In addition, products like wood items, cosmetics, and medical devices are also expected to benefit from reduced duties.

On the other side, the United States will implement tariff reductions on selected Chinese imports, including small household appliances, tableware, blankets, toys, children’s car seats, and holiday decorations. These adjustments aim to facilitate smoother trade flows and foster a more stable economic relationship between the two countries.

Adding to this development, both countries have agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, now set to last until January 10. This extension is designed to provide more time for ongoing discussions regarding trade and economic issues, thereby creating a more predictable business environment.

As part of their continued dialogue, China and the United States are expected to hold further talks, addressing investment opportunities, trade barriers, and other concerns raised by businesses. This ongoing engagement underscores the commitment of both nations to resolving trade disputes and enhancing bilateral economic ties.
