India, UK Accelerate Trade Talks Amid Global Pressure from U.S. Tariffs

Date:

Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and British Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds have launched an intense two-day effort in London to finalize a long-anticipated UK-India trade agreement, amid rising global pressure from Donald Trump’s tariff policies on exports to the United States. Goyal called the first day of discussions “productive,” signaling optimism without revealing specifics.
With the threat of U.S. tariffs disrupting global trade dynamics, both New Delhi and London are motivated to conclude their bilateral deal. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office emphasized that any agreement must improve UK business access, cut tariffs, and streamline trade operations.
Negotiations, launched in January 2022, have been protracted, surviving multiple changes in British leadership. Starmer’s Labour government has made sealing the pact a top priority, with Reynolds visiting India earlier this year to reinvigorate talks.
Key sectors under negotiation include tariffs on whiskey, agriculture, and automobiles, with regulatory frameworks for pharmaceuticals and investment also on the table. Sources suggest sensitive issues around whiskey and automotive tariffs have largely been resolved.
One unresolved matter involves exemptions for Indian workers from UK social security contributions, expected to be addressed in a separate treaty. Immigration policy remains officially outside the trade talks, although limited provisions for easier business travel are under consideration.
Both governments are pushing to wrap up the agreement swiftly, underscoring the strategic importance of strengthening ties in an increasingly volatile global trade environment.
